Safety in the garden

Safety in the garden

Our recent taste of summer in April had people not only donning tank tops, shorts and flip-flops but heading to the garden with even greater alacrity to tackle those spring chores.

Yet the heat wave was also a reminder that gardening, like any outdoor activity, is not without its challenges. Indeed, heat is the No. 1 weather-related killer. When working outdoors in the heat, you have to make sure to hydrate and pace yourself, taking occasional breaks. Ditch the beach attire for lightweight, breathable clothing – preferably with a built-in SPF factor – that covers your arms and legs and an SPF-proof hat with a broad brim, gardening gloves, socks and sturdy shoes. This will not only protect you from the sun but from insect bites. Speaking of the sun, we recommend that you still apply sunscreen, the higher the SPF the better, every couple of hours for added protection.

Meanwhile, don’t let the rules of proper form that you learned over the winter fall by the wayside in spring. Just as you bent from the knees to shovel in winter, continue to bend from the knees when lifting bags of mulch to eliminate strain from the lower back. (Kneepads and foam boards can also protect the knees, while glasses shield the eyes and ear plugs or headphones can muffle harsh sounds.) Reach out to neighborhood youths and day laborers to share the load. And for tasks that are beyond you and your helpers, we at the Morano Group stand ready to assist you.

Remember:  You’re not saving anything if you injure your health in the process.

Once you start a job, it’s hard to stop. But if a storm comes up, do so without hesitation. It’s not worth it to risk being struck by lightning. Finally, read all instructions before using new lawn equipment. A few precautions will help you enjoy your garden in every season.
