2022 Residential Design Awards: Bedford Quarry House

2022 Residential Design Award

Bedford Quarry House

The Morano Group is pleased to announce that Bedford Quarry House, one of our landscaping and hardscaping clients, has won a prestigious Residential Design Award from the American Institute of Architects, New York.

Designed in 2021 by Steven Harris Architects with interior landscaping by Rees Roberts and Partners, Bedford Quarry House picks up where Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, left off. The house hugs the land, letting the outside in and the inside out as it perches on a rock outcropping overlooking an abandoned-quarry-turned lake and the surrounding forest. AIA praised the design’s comforting serenity as well as its environmental sustainability.

We at Morano did all of the landscaping and hardscaping, including the soils, plants, plant care and maintenance; the masonry, patio, outdoor barbecue, walls, fences and gate; the drainage, irrigation, pond and waterfall; as well as the landscape lighting.

It was a terrific team effort that has produced a fantastic result.

the project

The Bedford Quarry House helps to restore, capitalizes on, and assimilates into the surrounding natural environment. A branching floor plan built into the site’s bedrock provides spectacular vistas of an abandoned quarry-turned-lake and the surrounding forest. This provides the clients with a sense of serenity and comfort. Compared to the previously-existing project on the property, the House’s energy-efficient insulation, reduced footprint, and improved rain-and-wastewater management reduces energy use and protects the forest and wetland ecosystem servicing the surrounding community. Examples of innovations addressing both client and environmental concerns include triple-glazed windows and a bio-retention-based septic system.
